Attention: If you have a GM Duramax, please verify your engine type before ordering any product. Many of the products we offer are not interchangeable with all Duramax engine types. To Verify: Check the 8th digit in the VIN number:

VIN Code 1 – LB7 (2001-2004)
VIN Code 2 – LLY (2004.5-2006)
VIN Code D – LBZ (2006-2007)
VIN Code 6 – LMM (2007.5-2010)
VIN Code 8 – LML (2011-2016)

In 2006 the GM 6.6L Duramax engine was redesigned to enhance overall performance and reliability. The LBZ tune resulted in a significant increase in horsepower and torque for the late 2006 model GM Silverado/Sierra 2500HD/3500HD trucks. A durable cast-iron block was still featured in these engines, but the casting and machining changed for the 2006 engines to strengthen the bottom of the cylinder bores. Internal components including pistons and connecting rods were updated for improved strength and reliability. The common-rail fuel system received some upgrades to boost performance. The 6.6L Duramax LLY/LBZ was also paired with new transmission options to handle the increased power.

The solid foundation of a deep-skirt cast-iron block and cast-aluminum heads were carried over from the previous Duramax. The internals of the 6.6L Duramax were enhanced to provide additional durability. The cast-aluminum pistons were revised to lower the compression ratio. The forged steel connecting rods were also reinforced to handle the increased horsepower and torque. One of the main components to the increase in power was upgrades to the common-rail fuel system. The reliable Bosch CP3 injection pump would still be used with an improved rail pressure of 26,000 PSI. The Bosch solenoid-style fuel injectors were updated to a 7-hole nozzle that sprayed fuel directly onto the new fast-heat glow plugs when cold to provide faster start up. A larger turbocharger inlet manifold was added to help lower intake and exhaust temperatures while improving responsiveness from the Garrett GT3788VA variable-vane turbocharger (VVT). The Garret VVT was also revised to improve overall performance. The combination of new mechanical components and an upgraded ECM made the 2006-2007 Duramax LLY/LBZ the most reliable, durable, and powerful Duramax up to that point.

In 2006, a stock 6.6L Duramax LLY/LBZ was rated at 310 hp and 605 lb-ft of torque, by 2007 that jumped to 360 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque. To handle that power this engine was paired with either the all-new Allison 1000 6-speed automatic transmission or the heavy-duty ZF650 6-speed manual transmission. The diesel market was starting to favor automatic transmissions, so 2007 was the last year a Duramax diesel engine was available with a manual transmission. To this day the LBZ Duramax engine is still highly sought after, so factory and aftermarket parts are readily available.
