In the second half of the 2007 production year the brand-new 6.7L Cummins engine was introduced as one of the many upgrades for the next generation of Ram 2500/3500 pickups. In 2009 these trucks received modernized body styles, new suspension components, and drivetrain options along with the new, cleaner diesel engine. Due to stricter EPA emissions standards, 2007.5 would be the first year Cummins incorporates an EGR system and a DPF filter on their engines to significantly reduce emissions. Integrating new emissions systems wasn’t the only improvement for this new engine, as the 6.7L Cummins also received some enhanced components that would significantly boost performance. The high-pressure common-rail fuel system received some upgrades along with a new turbocharger. Providing a durable diesel engine for the Ram 2500/3500 trucks was another major focus when Cummins was designing this new engine, as the prior generations of Cummins engines had earned a reputation for strength and longevity.

The 6.7L Cummins features larger cylinder bores and a longer stroke to produce higher torque levels from the factory. The Siamese bore design offers thicker cylinder walls so this engine can also handle performance upgrades. The deep-skirt engine block is cast in gray-iron to withstand higher cylinder pressure from the increased bore size. For additional durability a block stiffener is secured on the oil pan rail. Inside this engine are powdered-metal connecting rods with a fractured-cap design to provide exact fitment onto the crankshaft. The 6.7L Cummins utilizes a redesigned common-rail fuel system. The CP3 injection pump and solenoid-style fuel injectors were updated to handle the increased rail pressure of 26,000 PSI. Fitted to the 6.7L Cummins was a Holset HE351VE variable-geometry turbocharger. This variable-geometry design allowed this turbo to alter the exhaust flow rate, providing improved drivability and reduced emissions. Another feature of this new turbo was the exhaust brake capabilities. This would restrict exhaust flow according to throttle position, which helps trucks towing heavy loads slow down easier. The 6.7L Cummins needed to also include new emissions equipment with these performance upgrades to meet the stricter federal emissions requirements. This would be the first Cummins engine to utilize exhaust gas recirculating and diesel particulate filter systems. The EGR reduces emissions by sending exhaust gasses back into the engine before going to the DPF, which would further filter the gasses and prevent soot from going out the tail pipe. In 2013 the selective catalytic reduction system was integrated to the 6.7L Cummins. The SCR emissions system uses diesel exhaust fluid to convert nitrous oxide into water and nitrogen, which provided the Ram 2500/3500 trucks better fuel economy, less emissions, and more reliability.

To handle the increased power of the new 6.7L Cummins engine, new heavy-duty transmission options became available. The truck market was trending towards automatic transmissions which resulted in the new 68RFE 6-speed automatic transmission producing a higher power output than the new G56 6-speed manual transmission. In 2013, the high output 6.7L Cummins option was paired with the commercial-grade Aisin AS69RC 6-speed automatic transmission. In 2007, the 6.7L Cummins was rated at 350 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque with the automatic transmission and 610 lb-ft of torque with the manual transmission. The power output of these trucks would continue to increase, and by 2018 the standard output Cummins was rated at 370 hp and 800 lb-ft of torque with the 68RFE transmission and 350 hp and 660 lb-ft of torque with the G56 transmission. The high output option had power levels starting at 385 hp and 850 lb-ft of torque, which would increase up to 385 hp and 930 lb-ft of torque by 2018.
