GM 2016-2022 COLORADO & CANYON 2.8L DURAMAX LWN DIESEL PARTS & ACCESSORIES

In 2016 GM announced an all-new turbocharged diesel engine for the Colorado and Canyon pickups. The 2.8L Duramax LWN was an inline 4-cylinder diesel engine that was originally introduced overseas in 2011, but it was modified to be used in North American applications. The 2.8L Duramax LWN engine would be unofficially referred to as the “Mini Duramax” as it included many features from the Duramax engines used in heavy-duty diesel applications. This engine was designed to provide superior towing capabilities and fuel economy compared to the gas engines offered in GM’s mid-size pickups. These Duramax-powered trucks had a maximum towing capacity of 7,700 lbs and delivered up to 31 mpg on the highway.

The 2.8L Duramax LWN was constructed with a cast-iron block and an aluminum cylinder head, similar to the durable foundation of prior Duramax engines. Within the 2.8L Duramax were aluminum pistons and forged steel connecting rods. A laminated steel oil pan with an upper aluminum section contributed to the strength and quietness of this engine. The “Mini Duramax” utilized a Denso common-rail fuel injection system with solenoid-style injectors that were capable of producing 29,000 PSI of rail pressure. Fitted to this engine was a Honeywell variable-geometry turbocharger that provided the GM Colorado and Canyon power and fuel efficiency at all RPM levels. Emission regulations are different overseas than in the USA, so the 2.8L Duramax needed emission control systems before it was used in GM Colorado and Canyon pickups. The combination of a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), diesel particulate filter (DPF), exhaust gas recirculation (EGR), and the all-new selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system aided the 2.8L Duramax LWN to meet stricter EPA emission standards.

These 4-cylinder diesel engines weren’t just eco-friendly, they were also powerful for their size. A stock 2.8L Duramax LWN was rated at 181 hp and 369 lb-ft of torque. Paired to this engine was the GM Hydra-Matic 6L50 6-speed automatic transmission. Cyberpunk Diesel continues to support the 2.8L Duramax LWN with a large selection of parts from hundreds of the top manufacturers.
