For the 2020 model year the 3.0L EcoDiesel was introduced in the Jeep Wrangler JL. The 3.0L EcoDiesel was manufactured by VM Motori, an Italian motor company, and has been used in various applications in the North American market since 2014. This engine powered the Ram 1500 pickups and also powered the Jeep Grand Cherokee up until 2019. This generation of Jeep Wranglers was powered by the third generation of the EcoDiesel engine that included many new upgrades for better performance and NVH (Noise, Vibration, Harshness) characteristics. The addition of a diesel engine made the new Jeep Wrangler JL more efficient and capable on or off-road.
While many things did change for the 3.0L EcoDiesel, the solid foundation remained the same. This V6 diesel engine was constructed with a compacted graphite iron (CGI) block and cast-aluminum heads. To produce more complete combustion, the cylinder heads were revised to improve fuel swirl and flow. Inside this engine were updated aluminum pistons and forged steel connecting rods. This generation EcoDiesel engine had a lower compression ratio of 16:1 versus the previous 16.5:1. Like most modern diesel engines, the 3.0L EcoDiesel utilized a high-pressure common-rail fuel system. The combination of a Bosch CP4.2 injection pump and solenoid-style injectors enabled this system to produce 29,000 PSI of rail pressure. The 3.0L EcoDiesel was fitted with a water-cooled Garrett variable-geometry turbocharger. For this newer generation EcoDiesel, reducing emissions was just as important as improving power output which led to updated emission control systems. Along with the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system, a new dual-loop exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system was introduced to further reduce emissions. This low-pressure system recirculated the exhaust gasses back through the engine after exiting the diesel particulate filter (DPF) to minimize carbon buildup in the EGR.
Adding a diesel engine to the Jeep Wrangler JL allowed for better overall performance and efficiency. In 2020, a stock 3.0L EcoDiesel was rated at 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque and had a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 lbs. This diesel engine offered excellent fuel economy and drivability while towing since it could maintain peak torque throughout the RPM range. The EcoDiesel-powered Jeep Wrangler JL also delivered an impressive fuel economy of up to 29 mpg on the highway. Paired with the 3.0L EcoDiesel was the TorqueFlite 8HP75 8-Speed Automatic transmission with overdrive.
